Chapter 17

It’s the weekend, and I have nothing planned. I try not to feel too bad about that, or like I’m wasting time. The jewellery collection arrives at Danewright House next weekend so I shall be building up to that over the course of the following week and I tell myself that I deserve a weekend off, doing nothing.

I see that Joe is working in Diane’s garden on Saturday morning and wander up to have a chat on the pretence of thanking him for helping Kourtney out with her expansion plans.

“Well I shan’t be here forever,” he says, “I might as well pass on what I know.” Not exactly the uplifting words I want to hear from him right now but he’s down to earth and I appreciate that. He’s wiry and strong and I can’t imagine he’ll be going anywhere anytime soon. I have a coffee with him and Diane, and silently question my need to seek them out this morning. Perhaps I’m not quite as able to live without human interaction as I thought.

In the evening I’m relieved when Chris calls with his one-word pub question. Damn right I’ll join him and I don’t know why I didn’t think to ring him earlier. That would have brought much needed focus to my day. We’re eating our steaks, our meeting strangely without its usual conversation, when I realise he’s paused, put down his knife and fork, and is watching me.

“What’s the matter?” he asks. I look up from my plate and shrug.

“Nothing. Why do you ask?”

“You’re not your usual self,” and he peers at me. “You’re not wearing makeup and you have no perfume on, it’s unlike you.” Like I’ve said before, he sees me. I imagine he’d be the most unreliable of boyfriends because he’s forgetful of the minutiae of life. However, he would remember how you smelled, what you wore, every story you’d ever told him, the important stuff. We don’t often touch upon his love life and he seems ambivalent about it so while I appreciate every moment I get to spend with him I hope he eventually finds someone who deserves him.

“I’ve been a bit under the weather, probably coming down with something,” I say, “so I’m resting and relaxing this weekend.” He makes a murmuring sound as if he doesn’t quite believe me, so to distract I ask him how his writing is going as I resume eating.

“Slowly, I’ve had a load of work on this week that actually pays me some money so I’ve been doing that. But I have worked out the story line, at least as far as the climatic point, so that feels like a step forward. I just need to write it now though I should be able to crack on with getting a few words down over the next week.”

“I shall look forward to getting to read it, have you contacted a publisher yet?”

“Nah, I’m a way off that, anyway it’s tough getting published, Madeleine.”

“You’ve told me that before, but you must have contacts already.
